Recorder Karate: Lesson Two
Basic Recorder Fundamentals
1. Lesson Description:
In this lesson, students will receive both classroom instruction and online instruction to learn the basic fundamentals about how to play the recorder. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify basic rhythms (review), the pitches E/F/G/A/B/C’/D’/E’/F’ on the treble clef staff (review), necessary recorder positions, how to produce a proper sound on the instrument and a brief history of the recorder. Each student will take a pre-recorder assessment exam and will be expected to demonstrate at least an 80% proficiency of the overall material.
a. The National Standards for Music Education that will be met through this lesson include:
i. 5) Reading and notating music.
ii.9) Understanding music in relation to history and culture
b. The Michigan Standards, Benchmarks and Grade Level Content Expectations for Music that will be met through this lesson include:
i. ART.M.I.3.9: Use a system to read quarter notes and rests, eighth notes, half notes and whole notes. (Reviewed)
ii. ART.M.I.3.10: Use a system to read pitch notation for a major scale. (Reviewed)
iii.ART.M.IV.3.2: Describe how elements of music are used in examples from world cultures, using music performed and presented in 3rd grade
2. Instructions For Students:
1. Students will REVIEW whole notes/rests, half notes/rests and quarter notes/rests as well as the pitches E/F/G/A/B/C’/D’/E’/F’ on the treble clef staff by using the individual whiteboards and reviewing quick videos
2. Students will read a brief history of the recorder and participate in the class discussion on the topic
3. Students will listen to the classroom instruction about recorder hand position, playing posture, steps to holding the recorder and techniques for creating a beautiful recorder sound
***After this portion of the lesson is completed in class, students will be able to
view the classroom experience again by clicking on the classroom video below.
4. Students will be tested on their acquired knowledge through ProProfs (summative assessment)

a. Student computers with internet capability
b. Whiteboards/dry erase markers/erasers

a. Each student will be expected to submit a wiki response about what they have learned throughout the lesson.

a. Students will be graded on their ability to pass a pre-recorder assessment exam on ProProfs and will demonstrate at least an 80% proficiency of the overall material (including rhythms, pitches, recorder history information, hand positioning, recorder playing positions and sound production)
REVIEW:
a. Note Values-
Students will review whole notes/rests, half notes/rests and quarter notes/rests
while drawing them in the whiteboards in the classroom with instructor guidance
