Recorder Karate: Lesson Three
Recorder Notes B, A and G
1. Lesson Description:
In this lesson, students will receive both classroom instruction and online instruction to learn how to play the first three notes on the recorder. By the By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the notes B, A and G on the treble clef, will demonstrate how to finger those notes on the recorder and will use proper airflow to create a beautiful recorder sound. Each student will be expected to demonstrate at least an 80% proficiency of the overall material by performing individually on video (which will be posted to their portfolio) and participating in an overall competent AudioBoo recording.
a. The National Standards for Music Education that will be met through this lesson include:
i. 5) Reading and notating music
ii.2) Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
b. The Michigan Standards, Benchmarks and Grade Level Content Expectations for Music that will be met through this lesson include:
i. ART.M.I.3.10: Use a system to read pitch notation for a major scale (Reviewed)
ii.ART.M.I.3.3 Sing and play expressively utilizing a broader continuum of dynamics and interpretation
2. Instructions For Students:
1. Students will locate B, A and G on the staff by participating in an interactive web-based resource (REVIEW)
2. Students will receive their recorders and demonstrate proper positionings/airflow with the instrument in hand (REVIEW)
3. Students will listen to the classroom instruction about recorder fingerings for the notes B, A and G
***After this portion of the lesson is completed in class, students will be able to view the classroom
experience again by clicking on the classroom video below.
4. Students will be asked to play the notes B, A and G in different patterns, using expressive dynamics and different articulations. The entire class will have an opportunity to play in the large class ensemble for a proficiency grade (recorded on AudioBoo) and as a soloist (recorded on video for their portfolios).

4. Reflective Assignment:
a. Each student will be expected to submit a wiki response about what they have learned throughout the lesson.
b. The class will participate in an cumulative chain story about our Recorder Karate experiences through GoogleDocs.
5. Assessment:

Students will now play the notes B, A and G with guidance in various patterns as a call/response with the instructor.
When the class is ready, they will be recorded as a class using AudioBoo and then individually video recorded for their portfolios (while being given an assessment grade based on performance proficiency)
