Recorder Karate: Lesson One
Beginning Recorder Rhythms/Pitches
1. Lesson Description:
In this lesson, students will receive both classroom instruction and online instruction to learn the note names on the treble clef staff in order to begin playing the recorder. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify whole notes/rests, half notes/rests, quarter notes/rests and the pitches E/F/G/A/B/C’/D’/E’/F’ with at least 80% accuracy.
a. The National Standards for Music Education that will be met through this lesson include:
i. 5) Reading and notating music.
b. The Michigan Standards, Benchmarks and Grade Level Content Expectations for Music that will be met through this lesson include:
i. ART.M.I.3.9: Use a system to read quarter notes and rests, eighth notes, half notes and whole notes.
ii. ART.M.I.3.10: Use a system to read pitch notation for a major scale.
2. Instructions For Students:
1.. Students will review whole notes/rests, half notes/rests and quarter notes/rests while drawing them in the whiteboards in the classroom with instructor guidance. Students will also demonstrate their understanding by singing these note values on a specified pitch together while the teacher pats a steady beat.

4.. Students will then visit the site: http://www.musictheory.net/exercises/note/beoyry and assess how much they know about the names of the notes on the treble clef staff with teacher guidance. Students will need to show the instructor when they have achieved a sequence of at least 8 out of 10 samples correct. Students will clear the results every 10 times and try again if the results are not 80% accurate.

a. Each student will be expected to submit a wiki response about what they have learned throughout the lesson.
5. Assessment:
a. Students will be graded on their ability to perform the singing exercise, identify note names accurately with use of a web tool and participation on the classroom Recorder Karate wiki page.
Students will listen to the classroom instruction and participate in the individual whiteboard note value activity.
